You may DK, you may not. You may have heard of Mr Bennington, you may not have.
Truth be told DK has slowly almost completly vanished from the bodyboarding
media. All over the world there are underground rippers. The East Coast of
Australia provides a handful of some of the most under rated rippers the sport
has ever seen. Names like Jake Sharpe, Dane Pope and Daniel Bennington. Also
known as ‘Logan’. If you have surfed Straddie chances are you have looked down
the beach and seen him pulling into the widest pits of the day. He surfs amazing
and after recently hurting his knee belting a heavy ramp, he had a bit of spare
time on his hands. Dan was kind enough to share some shots and talk some booging.
Hey Logan thanks for taking some time out to have a chat. First up tell us what
happened to your knee.
No worries, I have a lot of time on my hands at the moment. My knee… Did it at
Straddie last Thursday. First wave, been out for about 5 minutes. It was probably
a solid 5 foot bowl and really heavy. I hit it super clean and flew. Landed way out
in the flats and my board just bogged. Creased it in three places on that one wave.
Wasn’t sure how bad it was and tried to ride another wave about 30 minutes later
and it hurt so much. Getting back to the car park sucked too… Went to the hospital
the next day and found out i had fractured my knee cap in a few places.
Fuck. That’s heavy. You have been surfing Straddie for a long time now.
What is the best and worst thing being a local at one of the best beach
breaks in the world?
The worst is definitely the crowd it attracts. So many wankers. The best thing is
getting to surf there all the time with my best mates.
So who do you usually boog with then?
Nick and Evan mostly, Stevie when he’s not hurt and the other usual guys over
there. All prone riders. I never surf with dropkneers. Its pretty annoying cause
I don’t really have anyone to compete with or push me.
As a full time Drop Kneer who do you think is pushing the sport, who do
you look up to?
Hahaha um after seeing The Lackey Project, Matt’s definitely the best dropkneer
around. His sections are so sick. Roach is obviously still killing it too. Apart
from that I don’t see much other dropkneeing. No one really gets shot run
apart from Matt.
So true. You have a shitload of good photos, and a swagger of amazing
footage. It doesn’t seem like the Bodyboarding media is too keen to
publish or get a hold of much of it. Does this frustrate you at all?
Thanks for asking this, hahaha. Yeah it use to annoy and frustrate me but now I
don’t give a shit. I don’t know what you have to do to get in a magazine. I’ve had
lot of good photos and sequences that would’ve definitely been run if I had a
different name. Its all about who you know not how you boog. It means more
that Matt gave me a little section in his video than getting shots run anyway.
He knows good dropknee….. hahahahhahah.
You have steered away from the comp scene and are known as a
‘freesurfer’. Have you got any desire at all to compete?
I did Border South years and years ago and that was fun. Feels good winning
but when you have a shit heat it’s so annoying. I was thinking of entering a few
comps just so I can surf with some dropkneers.
Yeah mate it would be epic if you did choose to compete. Your section
on The Lackey Project is amazing to say the least. Have you got any
plans to travel this year and collect some more footage?
Hahaha it’s pretty much 2 days at that reef and 2 days at straddie. I would’ve
liked to actually film for the video with other dropkneers. I was hoping to go
overseas in May but that’s kind of gone out the window. I am very keen for
waves but.
You don’t have any sponsors that I’m aware of, yet you surf better
than most who do. (Myself included). Are you just not interested in
sponsorship? If someone approached you to ride for them would you
consider it?
Hahaha yeah I don’t have any. Wish I did but I haven’t handed my resume in
anywhere. It would be great to get boards or at least cheaper boards. I’ve been
experimenting with my GoPro on my old boards but they are all so soggy.
Thanks for your time man, is there anything else you’d like to say.
Any shout outs you would like to give?
Yeah thanks Steve and BBS for the interview. I’m going nuts at home not being
able to do anything. I’d definitely like to give a big thank you to Chanel my
girlfriend. She has been looking after me since I hurt my knee.
Good lad.

Ash Bryant grew up surfing on the gold coast with mates like Corey Mclean and Joe Clarke. Constantly pushing each other their surfing evolved together as they each focused on their own individual style and technique. The lads may not realize, but they have paved the way for Groms on the rise such as Tom Rigby and BBS Team Rider Thorpe Waluew. Ash surfs amazing, his coverage in the latest Riptide was well deserved as he surfs better every day. Having some pretty good contest results under his belt Ash is focused and determined. A credit to the team we caught up with Ash to chat about the Aussie Tour, Samoa, Gambling and the future.
So Ash you did quite well on the Aussie tour last year, after watching you at the Pro Event at Dbah recently it is clear your surfing has improved a lot. You seem to be surfing clean and busting big. What drives you to compete and improve your surfing every year?
I feel it’s hard not to keep improving in a place like the Goldy. Even with the general lack of waves compared to other places, the standard of surfing is constantly being raised, and it’s a simple case of surf well or be left behind!
I get driven to compete and improve by watching others succeed. I feel that if they can do it, so can I. Anything is possible if you work hard for it.
Your recent trip to Samoa saw you get some awesome shots published in Riptide. How was the trip mate?
Yeah it was an amazing trip. The waves there are so good over there and really consistent. We scored basically pumping waves every day. It was almost to the point that we wanted it to go crap for a day or so, just so we could have a rest. I don’t think my muscles have ever hurt so much from surfing. It was crazy!!
What are your travel plans for this year?
I am really keen to do the European part of the world tour this year if possible. Other than that, i’m going to do Bali in July then just watch the charts and jump on any swell that I can. Especially around Aus.
It is clear your love for the boog is stronger than ever. What else do you like to do with your time?
I love anything that is creative. Photography, Architecture, Arts, Fashion etc.
If you could go anywhere in the world for a month, with whoever you want to, who and where would you choose and why?
I would get a massive super yacht, decked out with all the gadgets, all the top riders in the world, my mates and my family. We would then drive from Aus to Hawaii, stopping at all the pacific islands and little atolls we could find. The spots you would find would be endless and having the world’s best riders there with you, your surfing would improve everyday!!!
So you work at the casino as a VIP Host. Is it a sweet job? Do you get tossed a few chips here and there from the high rollers or is it more watching the same lonely old men blow their money?
Haha. Yeah it’s a pretty sweet job. Unfortunately, I can’t accept tips cause i’m licensed which kind of sucks, but you get to meet a lot of people as well, a lot of celebrities, business icons, internationals etc. which is a good experience. It’s not all glitz and glamour though because I also have to look after your everyday Aussie Joe blows which can sometimes get quite demanding. But yeah, there are definitely a lot of people out there with way too much money!!
We are stoked to have you on our team, who else do you get love from? Is there anything in the pipeline in regards to board models, sections on upcoming vids or any other goss you can fill us all in on?
At the moment I ride for Science, IAMNONE, Gyroll & BBS!!!!
Unfortunately, I don’t have a board model at the moment but hopefully it’s not far off. (Kids feel free to call science and demand an ash bryant model…haha) but yeah, i think i have a rider profile in the full collector’s edition of ThrashD released soon and also in the new Children of the Foam Movie release date TBA. I have a few other things in the pipeline so stay tuned to BBS.com.au for more goss.
If you won a million dollars tonight. How would you spend it?
I would probably set myself up. House, Car etc. then the rest I would put towards some time off and just travel around surfing wherever the waves are.
Let’s get deep for a bit. What are your views on the world in general? You know. Politics, global warming, the state of the planet in general etc.
Haha…ok. Ummm, I consider myself a pretty easy going guy, I try to live life as it comes and not get hung up on the small crap. I’m not very political so i don’t really bother with that stuff, but I definitely consider global warming a major crisis for the earth. At the rate we keep destroying our planet, we will have nothing left very soon. I know i sound like abit of a ‘spirro’ but I honestly think that this is a major crisis that everybody needs to recognize.
If a kid from the gold coast wanted to see Ash Bryant surfing amazingly where might he find you? Do you have a ‘local’ or do you surf wherever you want?
Currently my local is Palm Beach or Dbah but i can be found anywhere round the coast. Wherever the waves are best!!!
Where do you see yourself in ten years time mate?
Ummm….best case scenario i think would be to be making a good enough wage from bodyboarding so i can provide for myself and my family. What better way to make a living then by doing something you truly love and are going to do anyway.
Any last words???
If you truly want something in life, don’t wait for it to come to you. Stay true, stay focused and chase that sucker down!!!
Thanks a lot for your time Ash.

Lovin' life
Unless you have been living underground you would have heard the name
Thorpe Waluew. Having recently turned 14 Thorpe’s ability on the boog is
mind blowing. A cool, smart kid with the world at his feet. We caught up with
Thorpe recently (in between his busy schedule of surfing and playing Xbox)
while he was on school holidays.
Thorpe you have been getting a lot of coverage over the last couple of
years, you have done more travel at 14 then most do in a life time and
had some awesome comp results. Your surfing seems to improve
everyday. What does bodyboarding mean to you?
Well, it means a lot to me probably more then anything. It’s just without it
i would just be a boring person and do nothing all the time and bodyboarding
helps you with making friends and having good times.
One of your last trips away saw you go over to WA to stay and surf with Hardy.
Kids all over the globe would be frothing on such an amazing
opportunity. What was it like surfing with the best in the business?
Did it improve your surfing?
It helped my surfing a lot, i would just watch him surfing and watch how
smooth and clean his moves really were and i would just try to do the same thing
and its seems like it helped me out heaps.
You have some pretty solid support from some of the biggest companies
in the game. What are your short term and long term goals?
I really want to be world champ when i get into the world competitions
but for a short term goal i just want to travel and get as much shots/footage and
experience as i can.
You are pretty switched on for your age. You are well spoken, smart
and competitive. Do you think growing up on the gold coast and being
influenced by your older brothers and their friends has been good for
your bodyboarding? Where did you first start surfing and when?
Everyone that i surf and hang with definatly helped me to get better at
bodyboarding and what not, but i started when i was 10 surfing Burleigh beach
with my oldest brother Morgan.
It’s pretty safe to say you are a bit of a heart throb, how do
you feel about the female species? Do you have a special young lady
in your life?
hahah na i am a lone wolf haha
You seemed to be all about boosts when you were younger, lately your
surfing seems more refined and while you are still boosting higher
than birds, (literally) you seem to be riding more technical and setting
smooth lines. Is this something you have been working on or is it
just natural progression?
I have always tried to fix my style and surfing up, but i dont really think
about what i have to do it just normally happens.
Natural freak then. Who are your influences Thorpe? In and out of
the water?
Well my sponsers Billabong, NMD, Stealth and BBS (Burleigh Bodyboard
Shop) and out of the water my mum, dad, brothers and all my best mates that i
hang with.
Where do you see yourself in ten years time?
Hopefully still bodyboarding and trying to win the world title.
What is your favourite thing about bodyboarding and what do you
think it will take for you to reach the goals you want to achieve?
Friends and good times for sure.
Thanks a lot for your time Little man.
